After a 5-year hiatus, Arch
Design + Build is back!
We began with a visit to the
site, which right now is just a (not quite) square concrete pad with a crappy
plastic shed on it.
We have bigger plans.
At its best, good design is a
poetic response to place and circumstance.
So, we sketched, observed, and
measured. We were interested of course
in the dimensional site conditions. But
maybe more importantly, we tried to understand the more transient aspects of
the place.
- Where is the sun, and how does
it move?
- How do people move through and
occupy the site?
- What is the history of the
Prairie and the Fuel Garden?
- What else makes this place
unique?
- What are the latent aspects of
the site, and how can they be revealed?
These questions will become
the starting point for the design process, encouraging us to think deeper about
the spirit of place.
Can our design exist only here,
and nowhere else? Can it engage? Create place?
Reveal?
