FINAL DESIGN

We have a final approved design!  Now we just need to build it.....

Today our class met with the COD Director of Facilities, the Village of Glen Ellyn, and our lead client to have one last design discussion about our developed shed concept.

Next week we move downstairs into the shop and get to work.

STUDY 02: CONSOLODATED

This past week we worked on combining schemes and ideas into four developed design studies.  We also worked to simplify and clarify the design intent.

These are the four schemes we presented to our Fuel Garden clients yesterday.

Scheme 01

Scheme 01

Scheme 02

Scheme 02

Scheme 03

Scheme 03

Scheme 04

Scheme 04
After a productive client discussion, we have decided to attempt to develop ideas from scheme 01, 03, and 04 into a final design.

Mode updates next week!

STUDY 01: MULTIPLES

Multiple concepts, ideas, thoughts.

Multiple schemes, renderings, models, drawings, sketches.

This study is about brainstorming, testing, and asking “what if?”.  We are sketching in three dimensions and developing a lot of ideas quickly.  We are putting concepts out into the world that we can react to.

We had out first client presentation today, and then we then did some group voting activities and narrowed this wall of design ideas down to four concepts that we would like to develop over the next week.

Idea 01 to develop

Idea 02 to develop

Idea 03, a marriage of these schemes

Idea 04, ideas to combine

PRECEDENT STUDY

Today's class focused on precedent.

What has come before?

What is going on outside of our studio?

What similar things are being explored in the world of Architecture?

We find it helpful to seek inspiration.  To look for projects that have lessons to teach us.  To look at work that addresses a similar scale and similar design challenges.

Now the real work (the design work) begins!

ARCH DESIGN + BUILD RETURNS!

After a 5-year hiatus, Arch Design + Build is back!

We began with a visit to the site, which right now is just a (not quite) square concrete pad with a crappy plastic shed on it.

We have bigger plans.

At its best, good design is a poetic response to place and circumstance.

So, we sketched, observed, and measured.  We were interested of course in the dimensional site conditions.  But maybe more importantly, we tried to understand the more transient aspects of the place.

  • Where is the sun, and how does it move?
  • How do people move through and occupy the site?
  • What is the history of the Prairie and the Fuel Garden?
  • What else makes this place unique?
  • What are the latent aspects of the site, and how can they be revealed?

These questions will become the starting point for the design process, encouraging us to think deeper about the spirit of place.

Can our design exist only here, and nowhere else?  Can it engage?  Create place?  Reveal?
