SITE ANALYSIS

Today we visited the site to complete some observations and take some measurements.

We met with Professors Shamili Ajgaonkar (Biology) and Lauren Morgan (Speech) who gave us some insight into the history of the student run Fuel Garden, which supports the COD Fuel Pantry and tries to address issues of food insecurity on campus.

We also met with Remic Ensweiler, COD Prairie Manager, to get some information about the history of the Russell Kirt Prairie.

The purpose of our site analysis was twofold.  First, we were trying to understand the physical aspects of the site itself through taking measurements and observations.  Where are things located?  What are their relationships to each other?  How might this influence our design project?

Second, and more importantly, we were interested in identifying the more transient, or poetic aspects of the site that might serve as design inspirations.  I expect that the direct adjacency of the 18 acre Kirt Prairie to our site will likely play a large role in the conceptual inspiration for this project.

As was discussed on site today.... The prairie is our history, the fuel garden is our future.  That's a beautifully poetic (and symbiotic) metaphor that we can build from.
